Halloween Party

So, Friday I got an invitation to a Halloween party from a volleyball friend of mine, Ambershawn. It was later that night, and I figured, hey, why the hell not? I finished up my costume and headed over around 9. It was a little slow getting started at first (I even tried to be fashionably late, but apparently I wasn't fashionable enough), but picked up quickly.

Party Pictures

Man, what a blast! I got pretty smashed drinking beer, jack and coke, a gigantic red-cup sized vodka and redbull, more beer. I even did a kegstand. It was nuts!

Afterwards I walked home (I walked over too, it was pretty close to my place, and it was a good thing too cause I was *toasted*), and the drunken calls began! I have no idea why, but I always think it's just the greatest idea go to call my friends when I'm smashed. No matter what time it is.

Sooo...I woke up one friend of mine in Texas at 5am their time. It's not like I didn't realize it was 5am there...it just didn't matter. In the course of the conversation I fell off my chair and laid on the floor staring at the ceiling. It was pretty funny (at least for me!)

Sooo...my apologies to anyone I woke up. Happy Halloween!

Whoops

Awesome. Tonight, I told a great Catholic-bashing joke to a friend of mine.

Who unbeknownst to me...

...is Catholic.

Oops =)

The joke, BTW, goes like this:

A protestant minister, a rabbi, and a catholic priest take some kids out fishing. A big storm comes up suddenly, and the boat starts to sink.
The minister cries out "Quick! Save the children!"
The rabbi responds "Fuck the children!"
The priest asks "Do we have time?"

Visitors

Yay! I have friends! Cody and Ellie came to visit on their way to Huntington Beach, and we had a good time. I drove crazily through Hope Ranch, went down to the pier, and then we went to Holdren's for dinner. Appetizers and soup/salads were good, as was the main entree, but the sides were just so so. That's one of the things I've noticed about the restaurants in SB for whatever reason, the piece of meat or whatever you get is good, but it's pretty obvious theres not much attention paid to what goes along with it.

There was a *super* cute waitress there (no she wasn't blonde--fuck you Danny, I know you were thinking it), wasn't ours though =( The funny thing was, she came by our table with a pitcher of water to see if we needed more, and I looked over and my glass was totally full. Doh! So I chugged it, and then our waiter came over to see if we needed anything, and I'm like, "More water", but then he came back with the pitcher. DOH! Maybe another time...

Went to see Team America after that, which was funny, but I don't think it lived up to what I'd been hearing about it. Stopped by Firebird before heading back home.

Lemons

I saw a funny ad on the bus the other day. It went something like this.
Top 6 Signs Your Car is a Lemon
6. Changing presets on radio voids warranty.
5. Disqualified from Soap Box Derby for lack of structural integrity.
4. Your airbags require a bicycle pump to activate.
3. "Jaws of Life" standard, in trunk.
2. Airbags have telltale "Yellow and Gold Makes Blue" ziploc seals.
1. Greeted with nerdy billionaire voice asking "Where do you want to go today?"

Alright! I finally got a block today! I couldnt believe it. Swatted that thing down and dropped it on the other side of the net. I was like, "did I just block that? OH YES!!" I even started calling people after class. Man was I stoked.

AVP Santa Barbara - Day 2

AVP SB Day 2 Photos

Hol-ey-sheit. I couldn't believe it. After hitting 9'3" on Saturday at the Halls Fruitbreezers How High can You Jump thing, I gave it another shot today, and somehow, miraculously, I hit 9'11" That's just nuts!

The finals today were great. Youngs/McPeak took the first set, but them May/Walsh got ahead in set 2 and never looked back. Lambert/Fonoimoana vs Scott/Rogers was a pretty good game too.

AVP Santa Barbara - Day 1

AVP SB Day 1 Photos

Today was the first say of the AVP Santa Barbara Invitational. It was really cool to go and see all these great players out there. The weather really sucked though! It was uber-cold and overcast. I got a little souvenir though.

Broke Spoke

I'm riding to campus today, going along a flat, straight section, and then TWANG! A spoke on my back wheel broke. Which means it's the 4th spoke on my back wheel to break. Piece of shit, I need a new freakin wheel.

Cal vs USC

Yesterday I drove down to LA, met up with Kenyon and his friends, and we went over to see the Cal(7) vs USC(1) game. Expectations were high for a great game. Event Photos

Somewhat annoyingly the game started at 12:30, and we figured we should get there at least 2.5 hours ahead of time to get decent parking, so that meant 10AM. Kenyon was staying at his friend's place in Playa del Rey just north of LAX, and it takes about 30 minutes to get to the stadium from there (it's not all that far, it's just the whole traffic thing). So that's 9:30AM...add a little buffer time...then the hour and a half it takes to get there from my place (incidently, even though maps.yahoo.com reports travel time based on distance/speed limit, it's pretty accurate. What I make up for in speeding is lost to traffic), meant that I had to leave at 7:30AM. Ugh. Anyways, I woke up at 7AM, got breakfast, got my shit together, and headed out at 7:35. It was a pretty nice sunrise though.

The drive was fairly uneventful. Made it to Thousand Oaks in about 45 minutes, and then traffic got a little heavy but kept moving well. The 405 was heavy but kept moving (though the 405N at the 10 interchange was backed up for miles, SUCK!). I was supposed to get off at Howard Hughes Parkway, but get this--the sign announcing the exit is AFTER the actual exit. What the hell is up with that? Got off at the next exit and made it to Kenyon's friend's place.

I think we left there about 9:30ish, maybe a little before, and took the 105E to the 110N. We were supposed to get off at Exposition, but the carpool lane goes into this weird flyover thing and is separate from the main freeway. It was too lanes, and I think the left one exited left and I could have taken that, but I was dumb and didn't see it. The flyover rejoined about 1/4mi before the exit, so I left the carpool lane at a non pre-approved designated separation zone, and made it over 5 lanes with a little room to spare. Luckily traffic was only like 40mph, don't think I could have made it otherwise.

Really slow traffic going around this curve after the exit, but once we got onto Exposition it moved alright. We parked at this mosque at Vermont and Exposition for $40, it had a nice big fence around it so felt pretty good about it. Walked over to the Coliseum, to the entirely opposite side to get to Will Call so Kenyon and friends could get their tickets (as mention before, An Awesome Friend got me mine). We then walked all the way back around to the other side because there was a cart selling hotdogs there, had some food, and then went into the Coliseum.

I had a student ticket for the student section in one end zone, and Kenyon's tickets were for a section way the hell on the other endzone. Since I had the student ticket we all grouped together and went up to the usher, and I'm like, where's row such and such? They told us where to go, I guess assuming we had a block of tickets (which was the idea). So we all got into the student section and were hanging out. About midway through the first half someone (more specifically, this one bitch) complained that some people in our row were in their seats, and the popos came and kicked em out (of the section at least). Now I realize that technically we've all been assigned seats, but come on, it's the student section. First come first serve.

So there was the usual pregame stuff (Cal Band, USC Band) and the game got under way. USC kicked off, and booted it into the endzone for a touchback (in fact, every single kickoff went into the endzone, their kicker is *good*, the fuckers). We got a first down or two, but hand to punt. The snap was pooched and the kicker had to do something, picked it up and ran for the sideline looking to throw but nothing. USC got it on like the 25, it seriously sucked and they ended up with a touchdown. After another endzone kickoff, we were driving and I think we went for it on 4th down and didn't make it, leading to a USC fieldgoal. Was looking pretty bad, but the defense and offense got their acts down solid.

2nd quarter Cal finally put some points on the board with a TD pass and a FG. USC had 2 FGs, and at half it was 16-10. USC had a quick second half TD, but then Cal answered with a TD and it was still a 6 point delta. 4th quarter Cal drove down but couldn't make the TD, and then missed the fieldgoal! Argh! I hate kickers. Everyone hates kickers. It would have been 23-20 if they'd made it.

So USC gets the ball back, and Cal's defense managed to stop them (actually they did one hell of an awesome job, limiting USC to 205 total yards--WOW), and we drive back down and it's like 1st and goal on the 9. Incomplete, sack, incomplete, incomplete. I couldn't believe it. We HAD that game. Arggghhhhhhhh.

Here's my summary of things Cal really fucked up, and any one of them could have affected the outcome.

Two words guys: Special Teams

Oh well, it was fun nonetheless and a great game. I still think USC is overrated, Cal is better, and the better team didn't win. Of course, last year I don't think the better team won either. Wouldn't trade the wins though--I don't think Cal would have made it to a bowl last year without it, and without that, we wouldn't have build as good of a program as we have this year.

Drive back we took Exposition west and really had no idea where we were going (at least we didn't go east and end up in Compton), but eventually made it to one of those big streets that goes to the freeway (ever notice how there are about 53 exits for Sepulveda on about 20 different freeways? It's crazy). Traffic was slow but kept moving.

Beach Volleyball

It was an absolutely gorgeous day in Santa Barbara, so I went and played some volleyball. I'm still not very good, but I'm definately getting better as I felt this was one of my best games. Good serves (generally) decent sets (generally). I really need to work on my basic ball handling...the dig + pass, and then setting. I have serving good enough that my other skills really need to catch up. #1 thing I need to do is stop swinging my arms and use my legs. I had a couple of really good diving save sort of plays, I love doing those.

New Host

Cody is awesome. Cody is the man. Cody rules. What can I say about Cody? Well, he certainly resolves each and every one of my hosting needs. Since my cory account will be shut down at the end of this year, I've moved to a cody account. Serious upgrade.

Weekly Report

Well, this past week was my first week of classes. Nothing terribly exciting to report, about what I expected. The lasers course looks really interesting. Electrodynamics MOTS--hopefully I'll learn more than in 117.

Friday was the graduate association happy hour down at Q's. I met Nick (from my research group) down there, and we hung out, drank, and chatted it up.

Met some really cool people from Education/Child Psych. We had gotten on the waiting list to get some balls for pool, but we never got called or it was really loud, or I don't know. Anyways there was a table with balls no one was playing so we just started playing that, and after a couple games someone came and ask us how long we'd be playing etc., because he needed the table for a bachelorette party. He offered us drinks and food to move--so we're like, sure. We each got a drink, but no food...we were kinda bummed, but still happy with free drinks.

Afterwards we were both hungry so we went to get a few slices, and then to cold stone, and then there was some jazz at James Joyce, so we hung out there for a bit. Eventually we got kinda bored and split, but it was a ton of fun. Been kinda too much of a holed-up engineer lately.
