Santorini, Day 4

It was foggy once again this morning as I woke up and went outside to read. I got my breakfast, and Emma joined me, opting for a bowl of Frosties instead (though she requested some coffee). Kate came out last, and got her breakfast.

Kate and I wanted to go wine tasting, and though she was a bit hesitant because of her stomach, Emma came along anyways. We went to the Volcan Wines/Kutsoyianopoulos wine museum on the road to Kamari. The museum was interesting if not a bit comical, as they had some 'animatronic' people in the exhibit. For the most part it was really only 1 piston driving one, say, leg motion to crush grapes. The wines we tasted at the end were really quite good. There was a red, a dry white, and a sweet dessert wine that would have been fantastic with something very chocolatey. Emma and I got a bottle of the white each, a bottle to have with dinner, and Kate got a couple bottles.

After wine tasting, we decided we'd go to Red Beach, on the southern edge of the island facing the Sea of Crete. With no real street signs to direct us, we ended up going on this narrow road, which then turned to dirt and a dead end--turnining around was interesting. We finally go on the right road and made our way over the mountain, and down south past Akrotiri (which was sadly still closed).

When we got to Red Beach the parking lot was...insane. Cars were parked on both sides, and then there was another line of cars down the middle, leaving room on one side for about 2 cars and 10 cm, in some areas. I felt like we were going to be trapped there forever, but we eventually (miraculously) snagged a spot. I picked up some Coke Lights at a small stand (only 1E each--the cheapest I'd seen) and we walked along a small cliffside path to the beach.

The beach was very pretty, situated right beneath the red volcanic rock (hense the name) in the cliff. The lounges seemed especially packed in and crowded, but we got one and got in some good sun. The parking lot was far easier to get out of than into, as people weren't arriving anymore.

We decided that rather than going out for dinner, I'd make something back at the hotel since we had a small kitchen. We stopped by a supermarket we saw on the way, but it was closed, so we headed over to the one we went to before--also closed. Then we realized it was Sunday, and everything is closed on Sunday!

We went back to the hotel, and I went out in search of a mini-market. I finally found one that was open and had all we needed, but I didn't have enough cash and they didn't take credit cards, so I had to hoof it back to the hotel, get some money, then go back out. I got some pasta, some veggies, and some feta with which to make some very invented greek pasta, as well as some tzatziki for an appetizer.

I chilled the wine and set the table outside for dinner, trying to time the cooking to the readiness of the wine; the stove was a little underpowered and it took forever to boil the water, so after the appetizer we came back inside as the sun had set and it was getting a bit cold. The pasta was alright, though Emma opted for Frosties on account of her stomach.

We decided to walk back down to Fira and do some more shopping. We went back to the glass place and Emma spotted a vase she had to get for her mom. I finally convinced her to try bartering it, and she easily got about 15E off. Kate picked up something too, and I continued in search of something for my mom.
